When I first became a fan of Chris Lilley last month, I decided to watch We Can Be Heroes and Summer Heights High on OnDemand. I went through it in 2 days. At first, I didn’t think that I’d like Daniel & Nathan, and Jonah because they seemed too crude. But by the end of it, they became one of my favorite characters. It was such a fluke that the twins were brought back in Angry Boys.

I’m drawn to characters who have tough façades but deep down are really quite vulnerable (and sometimes sweet) creatures. I loved the bittersweet history they’ve given the twins: inseparable as kids but not as much as semi-adults. But I think even now, they’re still “close” but are just afraid to admit it. As much grief as Daniel gives Nathan, when it matters, he defends/protects and treats him kindly (in his own way, of course). They’re such an endearing pair. I did tear up a bit when Daniel said it was a “shit idea” to send Nathan away. He was looking away from the camera as he said it but you can tell from his eyes that he genuinely didn’t want to lose his brother.

Gran’s interactions with the twins and silent inmate Talib were the source of my tears from the first 2 episodes. She is a lot like Daniel in that she can spew the most inapproriate and offensive things but in more serious moments, she genuinely tries to console those who need it.

i just love sweet (and sometimes redeeming) moments popping up when you least expect them. As silly as that “eskimo kiss” seemed between Gran and her teen grandson, it was such a sweet and rare showing of affection from either of the twins. The boys keeping in touch with Gran and the banter between them says so much about the relationship they have with her. I can totally buy how she would be in their “Wall of Legends”.

I expect that this show will give me the giggles and the sniffles. As outrageous as some of the content may be (i.e. “pooing on cars”), Lilley still manages to evoke genuinely tender moments from these characters. I laughed at the most inappropriate time and cried at the most unexpected moment.
